In The Pale by Alex Delapena

We are super excited to present a solo show by our former shop staff Alex Delapena. He graduated from UH Manoa with his BFA & moved to California. He does some amazing alternative process/printing.
In seeing how photography acts as a reality time stamp, I sought to create images that derived from an altered state. Much like how a dream is a haunting presence that passes through you after losing consciousness of time. Through post-process experimentations after the printing phase in the darkroom, the images become distorted and obtain a new sense of reality. During the chemical reactions, the silver embedded within the paper substrate becomes solidified. Resulting in gaining a mirror-like sheen and or reconfigurations of the image itself. When creating images, I usually have concrete intentions, but the results are often very different. Yet, I’m often surprised by new outcomes of the inner freedom by printing in the darkroom.
